Websites for trade businesses

Two of my three client projects are trade businesses — a plumbing and heating service and a master electrical contractor. This is the sector I deal with most often.

01 — The situation

How it usually looks

The typical case looks like this: the business has run well for years, work comes through referrals, the local reputation is solid. The website is from 2014, barely readable on a phone and takes six seconds to load. That goes unnoticed for a long time — until customers start googling recommended businesses beforehand. Anyone who finds nothing useful calls the next one.

02 — What counts

What matters for trades

Phone number, dialable with one tap

Trade customers call, they do not write emails. The number belongs visibly in the header and on every page — as a link, not as text to copy out.

Photos of real work

Before and after from live jobs convinces more than any description. Phone photos are entirely fine; what matters is that it is your work and not a stock library.

Services individually, not as one umbrella term

People search for “replace heating” or “bathroom renovation”, not for “plumbing business”. One section or page per service — that decides whether you get found at all.

Emergency service visible, if you offer one

Someone searching at night with a burst pipe clicks the first result that says “emergency” and shows a number. That is the most valuable enquiry there is — and the easiest to lose.

The usual mistake

The most common mistake is a beautiful homepage with no sub-pages. Google needs something it can categorise — a single page listing every service in one paragraph ranks for none of them.

03 — Structure

Which pages you need

A workable starting point. Not every point applies to every business — we settle that in the first conversation.

  1. 01Homepage with services and emergency number
  2. 02One page per key service
  3. 03References with photos
  4. 04About the business — qualifications, years, people
  5. 05Contact with catchment area
  6. 06Optional: job vacancies

Plumbing and heating service

The old site took six seconds to load. On a phone, people left before anything appeared at all.

Rebuilt, with automated enquiry handling behind the scenes. The site now shows up in just over a second.

05 — Questions

Frequently asked

I have no time to write text.

You do not need to. I need about thirty minutes of conversation and a few photos from your phone. I write the rest and hand it to you finished, to check.

Is it worth it if I am fully booked anyway?

Then it is not about more work but better work. Being able to pick which enquiries you accept means the website filters for you — by stating what you do and what you do not.

What does a website for a trade business cost?

A compact site with the key services starts in the low four figures, a simple single page below that. Guide figures are on the pricing page.

Can you set up the Google listing too?

Yes, and for trades that is often more effective than the website itself. I will advise on it even if the listing is all you want.

A website for your business?

Describe briefly what you have in mind. You get an honest assessment of effort, duration and cost — and a hint if something else fits better.
